You’ve listed your caravan for sale. You’ve posted the ad, shared it in the groups, and waited. But weeks go by and nothing happens. No calls, no offers, or maybe a few lowballers and then silence.
If your caravan isn’t selling, chances are you’re making one of these five common mistakes. The good news is they’re all fixable.
1. The Price Is Too High
This is the number one reason caravans sit unsold. Sellers often base their asking price on what they paid, what they’ve spent on upgrades, or what they’ve seen others asking online. None of these reflect what buyers are actually willing to pay.
The market sets the price, not the seller. A caravan is worth what someone will pay for it today, not what you think it should be worth.
How to fix it:
- Research what similar models have actually sold for, not just what they’re listed at
- Ask a dealer for an honest valuation
- Be realistic about the age and condition of your unit
- Price it slightly below the market if you want a quick sale
Remember: a caravan that’s priced right sells in days. One that’s overpriced sits for months and ends up selling for less than if you’d priced it correctly from the start.
2. Bad Photos
We live in a visual world. If your ad has dark, blurry, or cluttered photos, buyers will scroll straight past it. First impressions happen in seconds, and your photos are the first thing people see.
How to fix it:
- Clean the caravan inside and out before taking photos
- Open all the curtains and turn on the lights for interior shots
- Take photos during the day in natural light
- Remove clutter, personal items, and junk
- Show every angle: front, back, both sides, interior, kitchen, sleeping area, bathroom
- Include a photo of the tent set up if you have one
- Take a shot of the chassis and tyres so buyers can see the condition
You don’t need a professional camera. A smartphone in good light with a clean caravan will do the job perfectly.
3. Missing or Incomplete Paperwork
Nothing kills a deal faster than a seller who can’t produce the registration papers, doesn’t have a gas certificate, or admits the paperwork “needs sorting out.” Buyers hear that and walk away.
How to fix it:
- Get your registration certificate sorted before you list
- Have a valid Gas Certificate of Compliance
- Consider getting a roadworthy done upfront
- Keep all service receipts and maintenance records in a folder
Having everything ready signals to buyers that you’re organised, honest, and serious about selling. It also speeds up the transfer process once you have a buyer.
4. A Dirty or Neglected Caravan
Would you buy a caravan that looks abandoned? Neither would anyone else. A caravan covered in dust, with cobwebs in the corners and a musty smell inside, tells buyers it hasn’t been cared for. Even if it’s mechanically sound, the presentation matters.
How to fix it:
- Wash the exterior properly, including the roof
- Clean the interior from top to bottom
- Air it out for a few days to get rid of any musty smell
- Fix small cosmetic issues: tighten handles, replace broken light covers, touch up paint
- Mow the grass around it if it’s parked at home
You don’t need to renovate it. Just make it look like someone cared about it. A R200 clean can add thousands to the selling price.
5. A Weak Ad
“Caravan for sale. R50,000. WhatsApp me.” That’s not an ad, that’s a missed opportunity.
Buyers want information. They want to know the year, model, what’s included, what condition it’s in, and why they should contact you instead of the other twenty sellers in the group.
How to fix it:
- Include the year, make, and model in the headline
- List the key features: number of sleepers, fridge, stove, tent, awning
- Mention recent work: new tyres, bearings repacked, gas certificate valid
- State the price clearly
- Be honest about condition, including any issues
- Include your location and how to contact you
An honest, detailed ad attracts serious buyers. A vague ad attracts time wasters.
Bonus: Be Responsive
If someone messages you about your caravan, reply quickly. Buyers are often looking at multiple options. If you take two days to respond, they’ve already bought someone else’s caravan. Keep your phone handy and be ready to answer questions and arrange viewings.
