Under 1 Hour
Vaal Dam
The Vaal Dam is Gauteng’s backyard playground. Multiple caravan parks and campsites line the shores, offering everything from basic camping to fully serviced stands. Bring a boat, bring a fishing rod, or just bring a chair and sit by the water.
Why we love it: It’s close, it’s affordable, and there’s always space during the week.
Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve
Rolling Highveld grasslands, game drives, hiking trails, and a peaceful caravan park. You can spot zebra, wildebeest, and various antelope species. It’s hard to believe this place is only 40 minutes from the highway.
Why we love it: Nature without the long drive. Perfect for a Friday night arrival.
Parys, Free State
Just across the Vaal from Gauteng, Parys has become a favourite weekend spot. The town is full of character with antique shops, coffee roasters, and riverside restaurants. Several caravan parks along the Vaal River offer excellent camping.
Why we love it: Small-town charm with good coffee and great camping.
1-2 Hours
Hartbeespoort Dam
A classic Gauteng escape. The dam is surrounded by mountains, and there are caravan parks with views of the water. The aerial cableway, restaurants, and weekend markets give you plenty to do beyond the campsite.
Why we love it: Beautiful scenery and lots of activities for families.
Cullinan
This historic diamond mining town east of Pretoria is a hidden gem for camping. Quiet farms and country estates in the area offer caravan-friendly camping. The town itself is worth a walk-through for its Victorian architecture and local shops.
Why we love it: Quiet and uncrowded, even on long weekends.
Magaliesberg
The Magaliesberg mountains offer some of the best camping near Gauteng. Multiple caravan parks are tucked into the valleys, with hiking, zip-lining, and hot air ballooning available. The Cradle of Humankind is nearby for a day trip.
Why we love it: Mountain air, hiking, and that feeling of being far from the city.
2-3 Hours
Dullstroom, Mpumalanga
The fly-fishing capital of South Africa sits at 2,000 metres above sea level. Cold in winter (bring extra blankets) but stunning all year round. Several camping spots on farms and lodges outside town welcome caravans. The pubs and restaurants in Dullstroom are excellent for a treat meal.
Why we love it: The closest thing to highlands camping in South Africa. The trout fishing is world-class.
Hazyview / Sabie, Mpumalanga
The start of the Panorama Route. Camp near Hazyview or Sabie and spend your days exploring God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, and the Blyde River Canyon. Several well-run caravan parks in the area.
Why we love it: Some of the most spectacular scenery in the country, and the Lowveld warmth is a welcome escape from Highveld winters.
Clarens, Free State
The “jewel of the Free State” is an artist’s town nestled in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains. Caravan parks in and around Clarens offer stunning views. The town has galleries, restaurants, and craft beer taprooms.
Why we love it: Mountain scenery, great food, and a relaxed atmosphere.
Pilanesberg / Sun City Area
Camp at Bakgatla Resort inside Pilanesberg National Park and do game drives in a Big Five reserve. It’s one of the most accessible safari experiences from Gauteng, and the caravan park at Bakgatla is well-maintained.
Why we love it: Big Five game viewing without the Kruger Park drive.
Planning Tips
- Leave on Thursday evening if you can. Getting set up the night before means you have a full Friday and Saturday at your destination.
- Book long weekends early. Popular spots book out months in advance for public holidays.
- Check road conditions before heading to mountainous areas, especially in winter.
- Fill up with fuel before leaving the highway. Small-town petrol stations sometimes run out.
- Pack for weather changes. Gauteng to Mpumalanga can go from 30 degrees to 15 degrees in a few hours.
