Second hand caravan prices South Africa - price guide 2026

Best Caravan Brands in South Africa

If you’re shopping for a caravan in South Africa, the brand matters. Some brands hold their value, have parts readily available, and are easy to sell when you’re done. Others can leave you struggling to find spares or a buyer.

Here’s our honest take on the best caravan brands in South Africa, based on years of buying and selling at Caravan Center.

1. Jurgens

Jurgens is the gold standard in South African caravanning. They’ve been building caravans since the 1950s and their older models are still going strong on campsites across the country.

Why they’re popular:

  • Rock-solid build quality, especially the older models
  • Excellent resale value
  • Parts are widely available
  • Strong brand recognition means easy resale
  • Wide range of sizes from compact to luxury

Popular models: Penta, Fleetline, Palma, Explorer, CI

What to know: The pre-2000 Jurgens caravans are some of the toughest ever built. The newer models are lighter and more modern but some longtime caravaners prefer the older builds. Either way, you can’t go wrong with a Jurgens.

2. Sprite

Sprite is Jurgens’ sister brand and equally well-regarded. They tend to be slightly more modern in design and layout compared to traditional Jurgens models.

Why they’re popular:

  • Modern layouts and designs
  • Good build quality
  • Strong resale value
  • Parts shared with Jurgens in many cases

Popular models: Sprint, Swing, Tourer, Alpine

What to know: Sprite has moved upmarket in recent years. Their newer models are premium priced, but even second hand Sprites hold value well.

3. Gypsey

Gypsey is the people’s caravan. They’re affordable, compact, and perfect for beginners or smaller tow vehicles. The Gypsey Caravette is probably the most recognised caravan model in South Africa.

Why they’re popular:

  • Affordable to buy and maintain
  • Lightweight and easy to tow
  • Perfect for couples or small families
  • The Caravette is an icon

Popular models: Caravette, Rascal, Romany

What to know: Gypsey caravans are brilliant value for money, but they don’t hold their value as well as Jurgens or Sprite. They’re simpler in construction, which makes them easier and cheaper to repair. We always have Gypsey models moving through our yard because they sell quickly.

4. Sprite (Escape Series)

The Sprite Escape series deserves its own mention. These compact, affordable caravans were hugely popular in the 2000s and there are thousands of them on the second hand market.

Why they’re popular:

  • Very affordable on the used market
  • Lightweight
  • Simple layout that works
  • Cheap to maintain

5. KWay / Camp Master

These brands produce entry-level caravans and camper trailers that are popular with budget-conscious buyers.

What to know: Build quality varies. They’re fine for occasional use and short trips, but they don’t hold up as well to full-time or long-distance touring as the premium brands.

6. Echo

Echo caravans are relatively newer to the market and have built a reputation for off-road capable units.

Why they’re popular:

  • Off-road capable models
  • Modern designs
  • Good for gravel road touring

What to know: Echo has a growing following, but being newer to the market means the second hand market is still developing. Parts availability can be more limited than the established brands.

7. Imported Brands

You’ll occasionally find European brands like Hobby, Fendt, and Adria on the South African market. These are typically well-built but can be problematic:

  • Parts are expensive and hard to source
  • Electrical systems may differ from SA standards
  • Difficult to resell
  • Service centres are limited

Unless you’re getting an exceptional deal, we’d recommend sticking with a South African brand for your second hand purchase.

Which Brand Holds Value Best?

In our experience, the value retention ranking looks like this:

  1. Jurgens (best value retention, especially older models)
  2. Sprite (close second, sometimes equals Jurgens)
  3. Gypsey (affordable but lower resale)
  4. Echo (still building its resale track record)
  5. Camp Master / KWay (budget brands, lower retention)
  6. Imports (hardest to resell)

The Bottom Line

Buy a Jurgens or Sprite if you want the safest investment. Buy a Gypsey if you want the best value for money. Whatever brand you choose, condition matters more than anything. A well-maintained Gypsey will always be a better buy than a neglected Jurgens.
