Caravan Financing in South Africa: What You Need to Know

Not everyone has R100,000 or more sitting in their bank account to buy a caravan outright. That’s where financing comes in. Caravan financing works similarly to vehicle finance and can make owning a caravan much more accessible.

Here’s what you need to know about financing a caravan in South Africa.

Can You Finance a Second Hand Caravan?

Yes. Most major banks and finance houses in South Africa will finance second hand caravans, just like they finance used cars. However, there are usually some conditions:

  • The caravan typically needs to be less than a certain age (often 15-20 years old, depending on the lender)
  • You’ll need a valid registration certificate
  • A Gas Certificate of Compliance may be required
  • The caravan needs to be in reasonable condition

Older caravans or those without proper paperwork may not qualify for financing, which is something to keep in mind when shopping.

Who Offers Caravan Finance?

Banks

The big four banks in South Africa all offer vehicle and asset finance that covers caravans:

  • ABSA (Vehicle and Asset Finance)
  • Standard Bank (Vehicle and Asset Finance)
  • Nedbank (MFC)
  • FNB (WesBank partnership)

WesBank

WesBank is South Africa’s largest vehicle finance provider and finances caravans through their dealer network and directly.

Specialist Finance

Some specialist finance companies focus on leisure vehicles and may offer more flexible terms for older or unusual caravans.

What You’ll Need to Apply

The requirements are similar to applying for a car loan:

  • Valid South African ID
  • Proof of income (3 months’ payslips or bank statements)
  • Proof of address
  • Good credit record
  • Details of the caravan (make, model, year, VIN, price)

If you’re self-employed, you’ll typically need 6 months of bank statements and your latest tax return.

How Much Deposit Do You Need?

Most lenders prefer a deposit of 10-20% of the purchase price, but some may finance up to 100% for qualifying buyers with strong credit profiles.

A larger deposit means:

  • Lower monthly instalments
  • Less interest paid over the term
  • Better chance of approval
  • You won’t be upside down on the finance as quickly

Interest Rates and Terms

Caravan finance interest rates in South Africa typically range from prime to prime + 3%, depending on your credit profile and the lender.

Common finance terms are 24, 36, 48, or 60 months. A longer term means lower monthly payments but more total interest paid.

Example Monthly Payments (Estimate)

Based on a prime + 2% interest rate:

Caravan Price 36 Months 48 Months 60 Months
R50,000 ~R1,700 ~R1,350 ~R1,150
R100,000 ~R3,400 ~R2,700 ~R2,300
R150,000 ~R5,100 ~R4,050 ~R3,450
R200,000 ~R6,800 ~R5,400 ~R4,600

These are rough estimates. Your actual instalments will depend on your interest rate, deposit, and any fees.

Balloon Payments

Some finance deals offer a balloon payment (residual value) option. This lowers your monthly instalments but leaves a lump sum due at the end of the term.

Our advice: Avoid balloon payments on a depreciating asset like a caravan unless you have a clear plan to settle the lump sum. Too many people get caught with a big bill at the end and no plan to pay it.

Insurance Requirements

If you finance a caravan, the lender will require comprehensive insurance for the duration of the loan. This protects their asset. You’ll need to arrange this before the finance is activated and maintain it throughout the term.

Tips for Getting Approved

  1. Check your credit score before applying. Fix any issues first.
  2. Save a deposit. Even 10% improves your chances and reduces your payments.
  3. Don’t over-extend. Just because you qualify for R200,000 doesn’t mean you should borrow R200,000.
  4. Compare offers. Get quotes from at least two lenders.
  5. Keep your paperwork ready. Missing documents delay the process.

Buying From a Dealer vs Private

Financing is much easier when buying from a registered dealer. Dealers have relationships with finance houses and can submit your application on your behalf. Buying privately and arranging your own finance is possible but takes more legwork.
