Thinking about selling your caravan? The first thing you need to figure out is what it’s actually worth. Price it too high and it sits for months. Price it too low and you leave money on the table. Here’s how to value your second hand caravan in South Africa so you get a fair deal.
There’s No Blue Book for Caravans
Unlike cars, there’s no official valuation guide for caravans in South Africa. There’s no book value, no trade price list, and no online calculator that gives you a reliable number. That means you need to do a bit of homework yourself.
The good news is that the second hand caravan market in SA is active enough that you can get a realistic idea of what buyers are paying right now.
Start With What’s Selling, Not What’s Listed
The biggest mistake sellers make is looking at advertised prices and thinking that’s what their caravan is worth. Advertised prices are what people are asking, not what they’re getting.
A caravan listed at R90,000 on Facebook Marketplace might eventually sell for R75,000 after sitting for three months. The selling price is the number that matters.
To get a feel for real selling prices:
- Check Facebook groups like “Caravans for Sale South Africa” and watch what actually sells
- Look at dealer stock and note their prices (dealers price competitively because they need turnover)
- Ask caravan dealers directly what they’d offer for your model
The Factors That Determine Value
Brand
Some brands hold value better than others. Jurgens and Sprite are the strongest in South Africa. Gypsey caravans are popular and affordable but don’t command premium prices. Lesser-known or imported brands can be harder to sell.
Age
A caravan from 2015 is worth significantly more than one from 1985, all else being equal. But age alone doesn’t tell the full story. A well-maintained 1990 Jurgens can be worth more than a neglected 2010 no-name import.
Condition
This is where the real value lives. Buyers look at:
- Body condition — cracks, dents, fading, delamination
- Floor condition — soft spots, water damage, rot
- Interior — upholstery, cupboards, appliances working
- Chassis and running gear — rust, bearings, tyres, brakes
- Roof — leaks, sealant condition, water stains inside
A caravan that’s been garaged, maintained, and serviced regularly is worth 20-30% more than one that’s been standing in the sun for years.
Size and Layout
Bigger caravans with more berths generally cost more, but there’s a sweet spot. Compact 2-4 sleeper caravans are the most popular in the second hand market because they’re easier to tow and more people can pull them.
Features and Extras
These all add value:
- Full tent and rally tent
- Air conditioning
- Solar panels
- New tyres and bearings
- Gas Certificate of Compliance
- Full bathroom vs no bathroom
- Microwave, fridge, TV
A caravan with a full tent, new tyres, and a recent service is a much easier sell than a bare unit.
Paperwork
A caravan with registration papers, a clearance certificate, and a gas CoC is worth more. If your paperwork isn’t in order, sort it out before you try to sell. Buyers are wary of caravans with missing documents, and rightly so.
A Quick Pricing Framework
Here’s a rough guide based on what we see in the market every day:
| Category | Typical Price Range |
|---|---|
| Pre-1990, basic condition | R15,000 – R40,000 |
| Pre-1990, good condition with extras | R35,000 – R65,000 |
| 1990–2005, average condition | R40,000 – R90,000 |
| 1990–2005, good condition | R70,000 – R130,000 |
| 2005–2015, good condition | R100,000 – R200,000 |
| 2015+, excellent condition | R180,000 – R350,000+ |
These are ballpark figures. Your specific caravan could fall above or below depending on brand, features, and condition.
Get a Dealer Valuation
