Caravan vs camper trailer South Africa comparison

How Much Does It Cost to Insure a Caravan in SA?

You’ve found your dream caravan. Now you need to insure it. But how much does caravan insurance actually cost in South Africa, and what should you be looking for in a policy?

Here’s a straightforward guide to caravan insurance so you know what to expect.

Do You Need Caravan Insurance?

Caravan insurance isn’t legally required in South Africa the way motor vehicle insurance is. But that doesn’t mean you should skip it.

A caravan is a significant investment. If it’s stolen, damaged in an accident, or catches fire, you could lose tens or even hundreds of thousands of rands. Insurance gives you peace of mind and financial protection.

If your caravan is financed, your bank will almost certainly require comprehensive insurance as a condition of the loan.

Types of Caravan Insurance

Comprehensive Cover

This is the full package. It covers:

  • Theft
  • Accidental damage (collision, rollover)
  • Fire
  • Storm and hail damage
  • Third-party liability while towing

Comprehensive cover is the most expensive option but provides the most protection.

Third-Party, Fire and Theft

Covers your caravan if it’s stolen or damaged by fire, plus any damage you cause to other people’s property while towing. Does not cover damage to your own caravan in an accident.

This is a more affordable option, especially for older or lower-value caravans.

Storage/Static Cover

If your caravan stays parked most of the year and you only use it occasionally, some insurers offer a reduced premium for static or storage-only cover. This typically covers theft, fire, and weather damage while the caravan is parked.

What Does Caravan Insurance Cost?

Premiums vary widely depending on the factors below, but here are rough ballpark figures for 2026:

Caravan Value Comprehensive (Monthly) Fire & Theft (Monthly)
R30,000 – R50,000 R150 – R300 R80 – R150
R50,000 – R100,000 R250 – R500 R120 – R250
R100,000 – R200,000 R400 – R800 R200 – R400
R200,000+ R600 – R1,200+ R300 – R600+

These are estimates. Your actual premium will depend on your specific circumstances.

What Affects Your Premium?

Value of the Caravan

The higher the insured value, the higher the premium. Make sure you insure for the correct replacement value. Under-insuring to save on premiums can leave you short if you need to claim.

Where You Keep It

A caravan stored in a locked yard or garage is cheaper to insure than one parked on the street. If you store at a registered caravan storage facility, you may get a further discount.

Your Claims History

Like car insurance, a clean claims history gets you a better rate. Previous caravan theft claims will push your premium up.

Security Features

Wheel clamps, hitch locks, tracking devices, and alarms can reduce your premium. Some insurers require a minimum level of security.

How Often You Use It

A caravan that’s towed every weekend has more risk exposure than one that does two trips a year. Some policies ask about annual usage.

Your Tow Vehicle

The insurer may ask about your tow vehicle to assess the risk of towing-related accidents.

What’s Usually Not Covered

Read the fine print. Common exclusions include:

  • Wear and tear and gradual deterioration
  • Mechanical breakdown of appliances
  • Damp damage from failed seals or poor maintenance
  • Contents inside the caravan (may need separate cover)
  • Off-road use on some policies
  • Unlocked or unsecured caravan when stolen

Tips for Getting the Best Deal

  1. Shop around. Get quotes from at least three insurers. Specialist caravan insurers like Kempston, MiWay, and Santam Agri often offer better rates than general insurers.
  2. Increase your excess. A higher voluntary excess lowers your monthly premium.
  3. Install security. A wheel clamp and hitch lock can pay for themselves in premium savings.
  4. Bundle your insurance. Some companies offer discounts if you insure your car, home, and caravan together.
  5. Keep a clean record. Avoid small claims that aren’t worth the premium increase.

Gas Certificate Required

Most insurers require a valid Gas Certificate of Compliance before they’ll cover your caravan. If you don’t have one, get it sorted before applying for insurance. It’s also a legal requirement.
